Jacquiline Cuizon, Graduate Site Engineer, Taylor

What I love most about my job… No two days are the same and I will never know everything, which ultimately keeps me constantly interested.

How my work has changed since Covid-19… If you’re working from home you can wear pyjama pants and a business top! Though in construction, certain roles require more of a site presence so stricter hygienic practices and social distancing policies have been put into place. With all this going on, there is a strong and more evident camaraderie between my team.

How I’m adapting to the “new normal”… Really putting the notion of reverse psychology into place. All gyms closed? Work out more at home. Social distancing restrictions? Socialise at work and meet others onsite (of course 1.5m away for no more than 15 minutes).

My new workday essentials are… All types of sanitisers – multi-purpose sanitiser, hand sanitiser, alcoholic wipes and more hand sanitiser. Every morning going around each room to say hello to everyone in the office before sitting tucked away in a separate area. Constantly taking excessive amounts of site progress photos because you never know when you’ll need to work from home.

The innovative technology or idea I’ve embraced is… Virtual team collaboration, especially the feature of screen sharing and controlling to avoid touching belongings of another individual.

My advice to others looking to implement this… Use this time to really put technology into practice. We typically think that technology means emails but programs like MS Teams goes to show how much more efficient meetings and discussions can be through video chats.

My most valuable skill in challenging times… Simply being always positive – instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create.

My biggest inspiration… During this tough period, definitely frontliners who are continuing to risk their lives to help everyone.

One way I’ll work differently on the other side of this crisis… As much as you can, take a well-deserved break and go out for lunch with your colleagues or friends.

What I’ve learned so far from 2020… The only certainty is that nothing is certain!
