Stage one of Melbourne Square, one of Australia’s largest development projects, is now complete. Find out how this $2.8 billion precinct is creating new space for Melburnians.
Strategically located with proximity to universities, arts, entertainment and shopping, the site was purchased by Malaysian developer OSK Property in June 2014 for $145 million.
The $2.8 billion development already features Victoria’s first double-storey Woolworths supermarket, an 87-place childcare facility and a diverse range of cafés and restaurants.
With architecture by COX and construction by Multiplex, stage one’s residential towers feature bold pleated façades that maximise views and natural light.
“We are proud to complete the first stage on one of Australia’s biggest development projects,” says Graham Cottam, Multiplex’s regional managing director in Victoria.
According to Multiplex, 2,926 workers were on site since construction commenced in November 2017 and approximately 51,000 cubic metres of concrete was used to deliver stage one.
Notable construction and design features include the use of around 13,642 glass panels in the pleated exterior design.
Extensive gymnasiums have also been built on levels 8 and 54, as well as an expansive 48m lap pool. The extensive public parklands features cascading water features and piazzas.
The complex will be constructed in five stages, with an estimated completion in 2027.
On completion, four residential towers will deliver more than 2,610 apartments, alongside a 621-room hotel and a 52,000 sqm commercial office tower.
The $400 million office tower – known as MSQ Commercial – will feature nearly 1,400 sqms of end-of-trip facilities.
Multiplex has delivered more than 1,100 projects with a combined value of US$87 billion.
